Something clicks when the right house comes along.
One Midwest couple, weary from looking at dozens of homes, finally found their forever home 18 years ago when they purchased a stately two-story. “It sure had all the bells and whistles and then some,” says Ann, recalling how her love of family heirlooms and Old World furnishings would be a perfect fit. Her husband, Karl, reserved judgment until he went downstairs to the lower level.
To differentiate the formality of the home’s more traditional style, one of the previous owners decided to remodel the basement into a rustically chic man cave. “Since we live 12 hours from the mountains, this is my Colorado fix,” admits Karl. Even Ann, with her keen decorator’s eye, was impressed with the meticulous attention to detail.
If you can’t get to the mountain, let the mountain come to you.
What makes the entire space unique are the walls covered in random-length, naturally stained logs, measuring 12 inches high by 2.5 inches wide, with two-inch chinking. The seven-foot-tall paneled wood ceiling keeps the space from feeling claustrophobic.
The notion of transforming an existing space into a place you only dream about is exactly what the homeowners want to stress. “This space is so accessible; it’s definitely a retreat that continues to indulge not just us, but every guest that visits,” says Karl.
