The Art of Tile
Nawal Motawi started making tiles in her garage and selling them at a local farm market in 1992. Today Motawi Tileworks occupies a 12,000-square-foot facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and sells tiles through 400 U.S. stores. Shown here are several styles of tile from the Arts & Crafts collection (left: Bellflower; right: Woodland, Gamble House Brookside, Songbird). The company also produces Art Nouveau and Mid-Century Modern tiles, including designs inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Charlie Harper. Each tile is a work of art that can be framed or propped on an easel. The tiles can also be incorporated into a showstopping fireplace surround, kitchen backsplash, or bathroom wall. See page 11 of the Decorating Styles department for an example of a one-of-a-kind fireplace installation. For more inspiration, visit

“Where History and Architecture
Come to Light”
Tom Richard started Old California Lantern Company to create high-quality light fixtures inspired by California history and architecture. The company designs and manufactures stunning fixtures using solid brass, quality art glass, and hand-applied finishes. Shown here is a Cobblestone Series (left) exterior lantern depicting a Monterey Cypress. The lantern is also available with different artwork, eight optional stained glass panels, and seven hand-applied finishes. At the right is a Huntington Lantern featuring a mica lens and a mighty California Oak Tree. The lantern is solid brass with a 13-step patina finish; because of the mica lens, it should be used only in protected areas. Each Old California fixture is one of a kind and will surely grace any style of home for generations to come. www.oldcalifornia.com
Fire It Up!
If you are thinking about adding a fire pit to your outdoor living space or replacing an existing one, take a look at these gorgeous fire spheres! Designed, signed, and numbered by artist Melissa Crisp, each sphere is custom made with a motif that reflects your passion or the location of your home. Do you love horses, fishing, the ocean, kangaroos? You can select from a number of themes or come up with your own ideas. Most fire pits are utilitarian and lose their charm during daylight hours, but these stunning works of art look equally beautiful day or night. The spheres are constructed of 1/4-inch steel with an iron oxide finish that is guaranteed not to rust during your lifetime. There’s nothing better than the glow and aromas of burning wood, but if you prefer a gas fire sphere a conversion kit is available. The fire spheres are made in Ohio and ship free in the continental United States. Visit www.thefirepitgallery.com to learn more about the spheres and the Fire Pit Gallery’s other products.
